CHOOSING A THERAPIST

It is common to feel troubled at times. Most people have moments when they feel annoyed, angry, sad, anxious, or frustrated. Yet when these moments seem to be lasting longer or getting in your way, it often helps to talk about what’s causing them.
Psychotherapy is a mental health treatment based on talking with a well-trained professional to help you better understand your thoughts and feelings. This can be different from talking to a friend, and can even feel a little “one-sided” at times, because in therapy, the focus is on understanding your thoughts and feelings so that you can have more options in how you respond to people and events in your life.
Perhaps one of the hardest parts of therapy is making the initial call to schedule an appointment. The difficulty may be caused by embarrassment, fear, or a feeling that "I should be able to handle this all by myself." Many people have these feelings. I usually recommend an assessment session, so that we can meet, discuss your concerns, and talk together about whether therapy might be helpful for you.
